His voice has been compared to the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, but comparisons aside the lyrics for this song are, in my opinion, spectacular.
It tells the tale of a preacher gone mad, having thought he heard God telling him to murder his family (“Spoke to the lord on the mountain top, his bidding was all I could do”) he is now being led to the hangman’s noose, with his “flock” baying for his blood. A fairly dark theme no doubt, but one that is easily pictured in the mind’s eye. I see a Cormac Mcarthy-esque landscape, with bleak and barren prairies and mountains surrounding a huge valley.
